UTAGAWA KUNISADA (Japanese, 1786 - 1864)
Man with Pipe, Lamp

  • Horst

It’s the left sheet of a kabuki triptych by Kunisada I (signing "Toyokuni ga"). Depicted is Sawamura Chōjūrō V as Suzuki Mondo (鈴木主水) in the play "Sumidagawa tsui no kagamon", performed at the Ichimura theatre. Date 3/1852; publisher Hayashiya Shōgorō, censor seals Mera, Watanabe and "shita-uri".

Utagawa Kunisada died on the 15th day of the 12th month in the year Genji 1 (January 12, 1865 according to the Western calendar).

It's annoying that some websites still say the year is 1864.

Thank you so much for your help,  Horst  for both prints that you posted responses too.  This is part of a big project that I have been working on for years.
