Hi, I bought this print from a charity shop here in the uk, and would like some help with identification, maker and when it was printed. It seems to be printed on some kind of felt fabric. There is print bleed on the back of it also. Very large print nearly A2. This is my first ever print and I love it.
Thanks
Taking a closer look, It is paper. I believe it is not a woodblock print either. Either way I love it.
The mostly used paper format for Japanese woodblock prints was ōban, c. 24 × 36 cm, and they have been printed on paper.
If you can see bleeding through on the back, then it should be a woodblock print.
The artist is Utagawa Kunisada I, signing here „Kōchōrō Kunisada ga“.
Depicted is a sūmo fight between Oitekaze (追手風) and Koyanagi (小柳), to the left is the referee (gyōji, 行司) Shōtarō (行司庄太郎).
Publisher is Nishimuraya Yohachi and date c. 1840.
Wow, thank you for that, just what I needed. Please see the other photos I have uploaded, taking a closer look it looks like there is no bleed. At the edge of the paper is a green border also which makes me believe it is from a modern printer? I could be wrong but that seems a bit strange. Thanks again.
No, it don’t look like a woodblock print.
