Hi!

Th Tokyo Metropolitan Library shows the Kuniyoshi 0753-C006 titled 春のにぎハひ at https://archive.library.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/da/detail?tilcod=0000000003-00049114

One can trust it is not an “actors off scene” piece since the rightmost actor is obviously a servant.

There is also the Kunisada C0753-C003 titled 春のにぎはひ at https://archive.library.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/da/detail?tilcod=0000000003-00049113

Both are involving kites and both have actors (1代)中村 福助 and(1代)坂東 しうか  in common.

Is a play about spring involved ?

Thank you !

Both titles are 春のにきはひ / 春のにぎハひ (haru no nikiwai) = "Spring Splendor" / "Spring Prosperity"
Both prints are New Year's prints (dated December 1854). All the people depicted are actors. Even the "servant" is an actor.
Although they are depicted in roles, the prints are not kabuki prints. The new year is being welcomed (perhaps in roles to be played in the new year).

The Kunisada triptych depicts the actors flying New Year’s kites and taking a traditional festive stroll at the start of the year. The Kuniyoshi triptych shows the actors accompanied by a large red lion mask. The lion dance is an established ritual New Year’s custom in Japan, believed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits.

    Thank you !

If I understand correctly, they are both mitate involving actors celebrating New Year in 1858.

    Thank you !
